You can paint MDF with household emulsion or acrylic, it takes them both well.

If it's a small job acrylic's cheaper, alternatively B&Q can match 250ml of emulsion for £2.50, which goes quite a long way.

I've been making a boxcab to go on the 0-4-0 diesel loco, but I really want a Porter on there and didn't want to remake the boiler 'cos it's the main weight over the motor, so hopefully a cab change should so it. Why are you using Y points in the yard? Might affect stock running, weaving in and out of the Ys...can you not use straight points to make a ladder?

DC kits would be the only ones I can think of that might offer such a thing.
