The lights are using more power then the controller can handle. Try LEDs instead as they use very little current, don't get hot and can be really bright. You will have to put a resistor in series with it if your using a higher voltage than the voltage of the LED.

The motor could be taking more current then the controller can handle - causing an overload in the controller. Its probrably the controller but just in case try the train with another controller thats different.

i'm sure that there is a baseboard advert in the back of the hornby collecter - i think its from a company called Model Baseboard Manufactures who are based in woodchurch, kent. Or you can always have the alternative option of getting the plywood/chipboard/mdf sheet,screws and wood for the frame and...
