Re: BR Gauge Wagon

That was the sort of thing I was thinking, but expected a somewhat more advanced electronic system would have been available even 50 years ago. Possibly yes, EDMs changed everything and I hadn't noticed how late the date was on the photos. I'm 99% sure there is some BTF film somewhere of it being d...

Re: BR Gauge Wagon

For checking the structure gauge, a couple of boffins (no doubt in black macs and trilbys) standing in it with ranging poles and tape measures. I presume there's either a datum point marked in the wagon somewhere or it's done by measuring between the top edge of the wagon (which is of known height a...

Re: Planning: Lessons Ive learnt

SL-110s - they can be made to fit but at some effort because thats not what theyre designed for. I use them for joining Code 75 BH to FB. Oen up the ends very slightly, fit them to the FB first then force the BH in with a pair of pliers, holding the BH as near to the end as you can get and keeping t...

Re: Transfers for wagon kits

Cambridge Custom Transfers do a very wide range of wagon transfers for the pre-airbrake era, generally about 2 dozen or more of a type or similar types to a sheet. Service is very good. Note that they don't actually do 'custom' (ie bespoke) transfers despite the name ! Railtec are also very good, mo...

Re: Hornby Railroad Plus Class 110

There's a thread on RMweb about it, in which Andy York has mentioned that he's reviewing it for BRM. In short it's the old one with a newer motor (looks like the standard Ringfield-replacement one with the clip-in axles), all wheel pick up (including the traction tyred wheels, not sure how that work...

I did miss it! Oops. I hadn't realised the thread was 4 pages long, (it's a very small phone, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ...). Apologies.

Re: Hattons closing down

State pension age is currently 66, you can retire whenever you like if you've put enough aside, either in a formal pension or just shoved enough under the mattress. Or you could buy a large online retailer in the US with it, which I don't think has been mentioned on here yet - https://forum.mrhmag.c...

The Loriot (Lowmac) is still there, in BR livery with a cheap Corgi Coles crane, but it's £65.

No, me neither.

In fairness the MR policy of standardisation and prefabrication meant that an awful lot of their real signalboxes looked like Oakham or multiples of it :-)

Agreed it needs work though, not just tipped out of the packet !

Re: Hattons closing down

It may be the (beginning of ) the end of the big club-run shows but I doubt its the end of shows full stop. There is a sizeable industry in hobby shows run by commercial concerns and, while some of them have been clueless when it comes to model railways (one a few years ago was proposing to charge e...

Re: Speedlink: early 90's question

Speedlink was the air-braked wagonload distribution network operating from 1977 onwards, Speedlink services carried traffic to and from several different customers but on a much restricted network compared to the old steam age wagonload operation. HAA merry-go-round hoppers were part of the trainloa...

Re: Speedlink: early 90's question

Agreed, no HAAs in Speedlink services* and the brake van would only be used with certain categories of dangerous goods, or if there was a propelling movement en route and those were vanishingly rare. *Not sure how HAAs were moved to and from wagon repair shops, that might be an excuse to include one...

Re: OO gauge track & expansion joints?

Well all the YT vids Ive seen from Pete Waterman's Making Tracks series, Charlie at Chadwick, Larry Puckett, the DCC guy, Richard at New Junction etc, etc show nearly everyone soldering fish plates to rails! Sam's Trains ran his trainset in the bath, doesn't mean its a good idea. Isn't the Peco SL-...

Re: Cliches of Layouts or Model Railways that you dislike.

How would they usually empty the trucks in that shed? Would there be room for some sort of tippler in there or would they empty by hand through a side door in the truck? The latter seems laborious. I presume the builder is trying to recreate a domestic coal drop, but the building looks more like th...
