Re: My first layout

There is a common issue in people with first layouts build them with as much track as can fit in. Then later on start pulling most of it back up, and often simplifying it (after lots of changes). I strongly recommend getting the two main lines down first with points lightly nailed in place where you...

How to know when the specials are going through

Moved into a new office looking down onto Egham Station, so far had four specials go through, heard them, maybe some smoke and seeing some nice pullmans going through. Is there an sites which say what trains are running that day, their routes and times? I understand you could look at each of the com...

Re: Ballymena Railway Station And Line

If you do use setrack on ninety degree curves you'll need to stagger the starting point to maintain a wider spacing between the running lines. This is a valid point for tight curves, setrack is an easier option. Although for other track flexi is more natural and nicer to look at. It sounds an expen...

Re: Ballymena Railway Station And Line

Hi, welcome aboard. Great place for asking questions, none are ever stupid when you don't know the answer, and we're all learning. There's a lot of experience on here, all waiting to help. I don't know the location, so I don't know how prototypical it is. Looks nice, couple of points (not literally)...

It is impressive, wondering if I could get away with using my black marker pens from work.

Re: It's my railway I run what I want

Absolutely and a word of advice don't let the purists get you down with their belittling opinions and comments which so often get thrown in my direction. DP Show last year, guy in the crowd louldly told one of our operators the engine could not go from the headshunt into the yard as there was no si...

Re: It's my railway I run what I want

I think the word "preserved line" or "heritage railway" comes into mind. That or running steam/diesel specials when you get the urge.

I said 'a little bit of what you like' to the missus, she used it against me in court.......

Re: Correct Protocol - Simple if you know the answer!

I take it by "guards vans" you are referring to half or full brake passenger stock. and if so the answer is a resounding yes. Jim Actually it wasn't, I was thinking of brake vans (I knew what I meant even if no one else did). Typing at that time of night shows not thinking that clearly. B...

Re: Correct Protocol - Simple if you know the answer!

Thanks, interesting replies.

As no one else has asked another question heres one; were guards vans ever deliberately placed in other places rather than at the ends of trains?

Re: are we killing model railways future ourselves ??

Just look at the RC car world, most of the big brands (Kyosho, Tamiya, Traxxas etc) now offer RTR cars of a reasonable quality. Something that they didnt do so much 10 years ago I fly model planes, and it is cheaper now to buy a ready to fly job than make your own. The RTF are generally of a very h...

Re: Correct Protocol - Simple if you know the answer!

Maybe its todays rules and regulations but I could imagine there's regulations about the transport of cattle and horses. Also them on what I would class as fast freight, while coal I would see as on their own trains, although I suppose you would also see them on mixed freight.

Correct Protocol - Simple if you know the answer!

Very basic questions, and you're probablly saying you cant see why they need asking, but thats only if you know the answer (there is however some thick buggers out there and we don't know all the answers) and I'm sure theres a lot more waiting to be asked by other thick buggers. I have a couple of M...

Re: Newbie question about diesel locos hauling coaches

I remember running through Woking Blue 50's as the hourly express, (37's were only ever on works trains and very rare), I believe they were mk 2's. I don't remember them being large logo's, which if I was modeling would accidently be modified to include the large logo's.

Running a live video link from a wagon.

Hi, probably discussed elsewhere but I couldn't find a post (these new glasses are sh!t). Suddenly had a thought/brainwave/question. But how do you run a live video from a miniture camera on your train to a laptop? Would be an excellent part of a display on a layout at an exhibition, maybe include i...
