I blame my eyesight !! How did I miss this ?

I was running my 'Thomas' layout at the Weymouth M R Associations exhibition over the weekend. We got all the bumf in an envelope and a quick glance at the cover picture on their exhibition guide had me thinking "I wish I had a layout like that !" It's only just hit me this evening that it...

Re: Why do my locos keep falling apart?

That video looks like a DCC fitted loco where the back EMF CV's need altering. HOWEVER if it ran well without any stripping or playing about there can really only be 3 causes. Soldered wiring joints failing, chaffed/trapped insulation damage. Dirt in the power line. That's everywhere power has to pa...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

If you look back a page or two you'll find my 'HSII -The Kadee Experiments' layout. Although this video is done on that layout it is in fact relevant to getting Kadees operating reliably on 'West Bay' Many hours have been spent working on HS-II harmonizing trip pin heights and magnetic strengths. IT...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Today it's dull, damp, with low light levels - Oh the joy of Autumn ! I'm currently finishing off our unpainted Dapol opens. I did in the end get one club member to take a couple, that now leaves me just 1 left. While they may not offer as accurate, or fine a moulding as a Bachmann wagon, or even a ...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Nothing exciting today, except I've managed to get the club to agree to dispose of our two old layouts and the joining corner piece. This means we now have more accessible space to keep this new layout on which tonight John has been doing some gardening. Perhaps a photo next week if I remember the c...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

It's taken me 10 days to go back and take the Hornby M7 apart again. After adding the decoder the chassis ran fine as I expected. After the body was put back it didn't run very well, stuttering in either direction and eventually shutting down - Thank heavans for Lenz decoders having a safety cut-out...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Hi Bufferstop, There is still much experimenting to go on before I give up on the Kadee magnets. These big underboard jobbies No: 308 are quite weak without their steel 'intensifier' as Kadee call it. Set directly under fine scale track they were only 3.5 mm from rail head height, yet barely raised ...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Another small step ............... https://image.ibb.co/eic1Dp/IMG-2852.jpg Which leads on to another https://image.ibb.co/ifCezU/IMG-2850.jpg Perhaps because I enjoy modelling, but making up these un-painted Dapol wagons is not a chore, but making up the tare weight from 3 pieces takes a delicate t...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Fix it for free ! - So you should, a man of your experience ! I suppose railway modelling is such a broad church that we must expect as many different attitudes and aspects of the hobby as a club has members. Doers are always in a minority though. I do however find that with the shared interest and ...

Re: Using Contiboard For A Baseboard?

Hi again Artisan, Roger (RJ) is dead right about the damage underboard pins can do to your hands. I now cut my track pins with some small end cutters. Don't try just bending, been there and done that and it can be just as savage on a sliding hand. As I said size is important, here you see a lightwei...

Re: Using Contiboard For A Baseboard?

Hi artisan, First I'm going to throw a question. How large a layout are you planning ? This can dictate the best thickness of material to use. Then again the number and spacing of underboard supports follow your planned size. I have used 4 & 6 mm ply, Melamine covered Contiboard, and 12 mm chipb...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Hi Bufferstop, Kadees are generally a failure when trying to shunt just one, 9, or 10 ft chassis British outline wagon. Many of those who claim they are so good, have HAD to find a way to make them do the promised job. Let's start with the run around on passenger trains, no real problem as the lengt...

Re: West Bay Bridport - Club Layout

Thanks for the comment chops, The current fiasco is trying to get the Kadee magnet strength right, which of course it never will be ! Initially the underboard magnets were too deep, barely a flicker as a wagon was run over it by hand. Add the enhancing plate on the magnets back and while the uncoupl...
