Re: UK or Bust 2020

The rail pass is extremely good value for money, compared to standard rail fares. I live in the Philippines and when returning to the UK I always use one. A big advantage is the ability to take any train, so detailed departure time planning is not critical.

Re: A basic track - a beginner needs hellp, wiring

Assuming you want to keep the size of the layout as is, can I suggest these very minor changes to extend the lengths of the sidings. (May make shunting easier for an 8 year old!)

Re: Small double O layout

I enjoy fiddling with little layouts like this, but I think you are going to need a wider space. An inverted fig 8, needs a little more depth (90cm) but less width (110cm). This one is shown using Peco track.

Re: 4amp alternative for Select controller

When I was using a select I purchase a cheap unbranded 4.5amp power supply for it. The select continued to operate perfectly until I purchased an NCE years later.

Re: Egg Tray Sandwich

Thanks for the idea Bufferstop. My Isuzu pick up is currently being stripped back to bare metal & then resprayed so I've asked the owner of the shop about your idea. His response was 'It is extremely rare for body panels to be imported to Bohol Island, but more likely in Manila. In Bohol we will...

Re: Egg Tray Sandwich

I am definitely going to try sandwiching the polystyrene between 2 thin ply sheets. Can't do it yet as my pick up is in the shop for a complete respray. This is scheduled to take a couple of months so I can't fetch my ply until I've got my vehicle back. This small board (120x100cm) is earmarked for ...

Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

Finely had time today to do an OO gauge test. Using the 9 volt battery a hornby 0-4-0 loco ran for 2hrs 45mins until it finally stopped. The loco was not hauling anything so this time needs treating with suspicion! Next test will be a loco hauling 3 x 4 wheeled hornby coaches. They are not at all fr...

Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

power for controller.png Over 5 hours later the kato chassis is still travelling happily around the oval with the 9v battery powering the controller. It is a cheap rechargeable rated at 180mAh. The battery was fully charged & reading 10 volts. 3 hours later it is reading 8.2 volts. The ah draw ...

Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

Still not tested with the OO locos. but whilst the kato chassis were very controllable at full throttle they were far too quick! I connected the controller to a little 9 volt battery (the standard little oblong one that fits into a multimeter). Again the chassis were extremely controllable at low sp...

Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

Double delivery today! the 5v -12v cable arrived, together with 3 kato power chassis. clipped together a small circle of Kato unitrack and made all the connections. (5v 20000ma power bank to 5v in 12v out cable - to PWM variable speed controller - to track) Voltage output was 12.5volts at max settin...

Re: Egg Tray Sandwich

Not done it yet I'm afraid! 1st. problem was sourcing clean new egg trays. 2nd Problem was that, once I examined egg trays closely, I realised the 'pyramids' that make up the egg trays provided small surface area to glue to the ply. I'm going to try sandwiching a 0.75in piece of styrofoam between 2 ...

Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

To be honest if it won't let me run a train for a couple of hours I'll revert to plan b, which is to purchase something like this https://www.lazada.com.ph/products/leoch-12v-5ah-rechargeable-sealed-lead-acid-battery-for-ups-solar-emergency-lights-e-vehicles-i257781441-s355155923.html? Re: 5volt to 12volt converter

I'm surprised my electrical calculations are right TimberSurf! (But of course no allowances have been made for system losses etc.) Paul - When I look at the size & weight of a 2AH 6v motorcycle battery I do wonder how they can claim to have encapsulated 20000ma into this inexpensive little devic...
