Re: Lubrication

I wouldn't recommend dabbling with anything other than recommended electrical oils - such as those mentioned - the risk of damage makes it just not worth it. Many of the motors I have repaired have had problems due to the wrong lubrication - too much lubrication - too thick a lubrication (lacks visc...

Ah the flying banana parcels van - the early ex-Lima class 20's use a similar arrangement too - foxed me for 20 minutes..

Re: Bachmann no longer list Hattons as a stockist

I just see many people using this as an excuse to bash Bachmann (at least that's the way a lot of the posts read) when in fact it was Hatton's antics that have caused it. Not in a modelling sense - just a business-sense and they probably deserve that on the basis of this move  Hattons in my v...

Re: First time model loco buyer, any tips/advice please.

Hornby's latest Black 5 is the only RTR choice and is excellent - try R2321 r3303 etc

DCC is another matter - many of them are DCC-Ready (DCC socket but no DCC chip).

Re: Carmel Quarry & Turlough.

Of course... Number 1 rule...leave it as you found it... I doubt there's anybody planning on taking a walk like yours who isn't fully on board with that. The comment arises from conversation yesterday evening with a somewhat irritated old friend, who bears a share in the responsibility for some sig...

Re: How were Old Oak Common's allocation of Standard 2-6-4 tanks used?

The WR drivers alledgedly did not even like the St3 2-6-2T - which was deliberately designed partly along the lines of the Prairies of both types - almost as an appeasment..?

Re: How were Old Oak Common's allocation of Standard 2-6-4 tanks used?

I'd be interested if anyone can provide specific confirmation as to their use, as I didn't know that OOC had had them. There were some at other WR sheds in the '60s though, certainly Leamington had the now preserved 80072 and it does seem to have been regarded as a Prairie equivalent. As far as I k...

Re: How were Old Oak Common's allocation of Standard 2-6-4 tanks used?

The possibly disappointing answer is that the ex-LTS standard 4's weren't used by OOC - just stored prior to onward dispersal to other WR sheds - notably in central Wales. Many of the LTS engines ended up at Barry - e.g. 80072. "Barry Scrapyard - the preservation miracle" is an excellent r...

Excellent - fond memories of these in the late 70's on Liverpool-Newcastle trains and a little later with Mk2 aircon stock on the North Wales Main Line.

Love the blog too 8)

Agree this can be a fun plan.

I would be tempted to keep adding wagons - so that the last one is just clearing the crossing as the engine at the front arrives

Re: Welshpool and Llanfair in 1976.

It's a great place to visit, especially if you are staying locally - as you have the 'bright lights' of Welshpool at one end (well pubs and shops!) and a more relaxed vibe in Llanfair C - with only a couple of excellent pubs and an excellent chippy!!. Llanfair C station itself is worth a visit too -...
