Re: Triang R357
A bit late, but I have found that cotton buds with plastic stems (now probably being phased out, replaced by card stems) can provide a replacement to the round “spring” part of the plastic bearings on these motors. A section of stem is cut off. Not glued in place, just put in place of the broken ori...

Re: Liquid Chlorine
You need to define your period a little more closely. If by the reference to 'Southern Railway' it is the 1923 - 47 span of time then the dominant UK chemical business is ICI, which was created by merger in 1926. ICI 'Mond Division' Liquid Chlorine Rail Tanks were both built and operated in this pe...

Re: Hornby Dublo 5005 - 2-road Engine Shed
As far as I know, Tri-ang Hornby didn’t make the Engine Shed in Tri-ang Maroon/red brick colour, with white windows. That was the Large Terminus/ Through station assembly set, with the overall roof. The red Engine Shed, similar to the Hornby Dublo model was made for Playcraft Railways, possibly by J...

Re: Hornby Dublo 5005 - 2-road Engine Shed
Bear in mind that the roof and sides were originally bolted together, with Meccano nuts and bolts, not glued. Even less common is the extension kit, which allowed two kits to be joined together, making a 4 road shed. It is believed that the Dublo model was based on a shed at Chester Northgate. Playc...

Re: Carriages derailing
Yes there are definitely square axel ones that came from China. Are the plastic on metal axle ones old Hornby Dublo ex Wrenn bought back by Hornby from Dapol. What cam from where and where it visited on the way seems to get a little muddled at times. I can remember Dapol issuing a full page article...

Re: Carriages derailing
Let's establish just how old these coaches are, the very oldest would be from the days before Triang took over the Hornby range. Each wheelset is a pair of plastic wheels each with half of a hollow axle which slides about on a central metal pin. You definitely need to replace these with new Hornby ...

Re: carbon Black
There used to be a large plant by the Shropshire Union Canal near Ellesmere Port, in Cheshire. It was Cabot Carbon. Basically, the plant burned oil, and collected the soot, which was Carbon Black. The plant gave off a large amount of heat, some of the pipe work glowed red, and there was a blue haze ...

Re: Mystery clockwork loco, help with I.D
No, not Playcraft....which was the Jouef model anyway... We had one of these a while ago now, and if I remember correctly, it was a Wells Brimtoy loco... https://www.hornby.com/us-en/forum/mystery-clockwork-loco/?p=1 https://picclick.com/Wells-Brimtoy-Welsotoys-00-Gauge-Clockwork-Train-Set-142709820...

That’s good to know.
It can be tricky finding some parts like handrails.

Re: The Big Three is now the Big Four
Hi.
You know that the Class 5 is missing the handrail, at least on the pictured side?
These Class 5 locos were usually painted black, and got the name Black 5.
Hornby released this model in a version of LMS “maroon”....

Re: Airfix\Dapol Turntable
It is possible to connect the rails on the rotating bridge to the inlet track... The clever bit is making the connexion in such a way as when the turntable bridge is rotated 180 degrees, a short circuit is avoided. Also if wires are used, they can get twisted. Some RTR turntables, such as the older ...
