Re: Dapol 00 Gauge Manor.
Dapol have just put up photos of production samples. https://www.dapol.co.uk/78XX-Manor-Production-Samples-Have-Arrived Dapol have put a 'flower pot' on the models representing re-draughted condition, instead of a larger diameter parallel chimney. I forsee lots of 'where do I get a better chimney fr...

Failure to start
This was a new one on me. Yesterday went to bring a diesel into service after 4 months standing on the layout but not run as it is the last diesel to enter service, (and today we reset to all steam operation in 1955) and it wouldn't go; even though its lights were on so the decoder was definitely on...

Re: Shunting Layout Couplings
Thanks for that, most interesting. I will not be moving off the shortened Bachmann miniature tension lock, for the simple reason that the 500ish loose coupled wagons are mostly from Bachmann, and the simple demands of economy suggests making the best of the coupler that came fitted. It's the other 3...

Re: Shunting Layout Couplings
The S&W is still around, sold by Wizard Models and is ideal for a shunting layout. esp if you use it single ended, which makes them easier to install and only needs a bar at one end. I use the 3mm delayed action version and can be set to allow buffers touching when the hook is lowered. I also h...

Re: Shunting Layout Couplings
What has happened to the Sprat & Winkle couplings these days? Hopefully now obsolete. That ugly bar across the bufferheads, and the overlong hook make it inferior to the simpler route of the Bachmann miniature tension lock with the Brian Kirby mod; and that's in both of appearance and function....

I expect that's it, doesn't want to have to fight his way around the M25 to go North of the river; and quite possibly venue rentals are excessive?

Interesting, Essex, Sussex or Kent. Perhaps the operators have had bad experiences in Mercia?

Re: Dummy Locos
I used to sell s/h Land Rover spares, and it's a sad truth that parts make more than complete vehicles - I 'killed' many perfectly good cars to make more cash. I didn't like it, but gotta pay the bills. The Hornby tin plate boys and girls have the same thing going on, perhaps more business oriented...

Re: Henley's Big Expansion
You would have thought that correcting the position of a presumably non driven axle's hole would be relatively low cost to changing the dies for a detailed body, or does this mean that somewhere there's a chassis mountain that they'd rather make use of... My suspicion is that this model requires a ...

Re: Henley's Big Expansion
...What I see is a mishmash approach where really Hornby are aiming for adult collectors which is a different market than the people who want to daily run their trains... I don't think Hornby's aim is that good, 'mishmash' (a term I last heard from my late mother!) is on the money. Hard to know wha...

...the Rocket functioned exquisitely, gliding over the diamond junctions without a murmur of complaint, even at slow scale speeds, where I like things to be. One oddity is the tender axles are inside plastic sleeves and again supported by journal boxes, which has the effect of dampening the tender ...

Re: Heljan Gresley O2 2-8-0 in GNR style
Yes, I would prefer a more conventional construction! But there it is, this is what is available as a RTR model of this subject, and I don't attempt anything beyond smaller six-coupleds by DIY these days. ...Were it "on a ship" at the bottom of the sea, I would care less. More likely in a ...

Passenger trains are run about as an added attraction, but rarely is much emphasis ever placed upon passenger stations and termini... Keep in mind how tiny the UK is. Re: Heljan Locos - Are they any good?
Only as an FYI for anyone reading. The spares agent for Heljan's OO is currently Gaugemaster. (Previous agent was Howes of Oxford; they held the agency for the best part of twenty years, from the introduction of UK product.) There was a brief period of gear problems with Heljan around 2010, a flurry...
