Re: WCML Franchise

Now we have the big inquiry and a promised fresh start to the franchising of InterCity West Coast. I wonder if the politicians and civil servants will pick the easy option to avoid rekindling the Virgin -v- First acrimony: award the franchise to neither of them! SNCF anyone?

Re: Last Regular Service Day Met Line A-Stock Wed 26th Septe

Thanks for posting the photos. The changeover seems to have happened so quickly. It seems no time at all since I was surprised by the unusual sight of an S-stock train coming into the station. Glad I had a ride around on the A-stock while I had the chance.

Re: Class 68 - coming soon

Many thanks for the link. Definite evolution - in appearance - of the Class 67. Thankfully none of the horror of the Class 70 body design.

PowerHaul for mainland Europe

GE Transportation is launching the PowerHaul loco for mainland Europe. Some smoothing out of the design compared to the Freightliner Class 70.....

Re: WCML Franchise

I suspect the number of signatures on the e-petition reflects more the power of branding (Virgin) and celebrity (Richard Branson) than any objective concerns about the awarding of franchises, the quality of service, returns for the taxpayer or the T&Cs of railway staff.

Re: WCML Franchise

I am no fan of First Group - or Virgin. The great bulk of investment in the WCML upgrade was taxpayers' - not Virgin's - money, so let's see some realism in who gets the praise - and brickbats. Virgin's trains and fares regime were interesting experiments at the beginning of the privatisation era, b...

Re: WCML Franchise

So, the WCML goes to First Group. Beardy says this could be the end of Virgin involvement in rail. Well, as the saying goes, 'Every cloud has a silver lining'!

M G Sharp - Sheffield

Is M G Sharp of Sheffield still in business? The website hasn't functioned for some months and I have not recently seen their adverts in either the N-gauge Society Journal or Continental Modeller.

Re: Ugliest Model EVER!

Personally I don't think that it's that bad. After all it was designed by a child in a competition and was reproduced on the real loco as the winning entry. It's bright and colourful, says something ('day' on one side and 'night' on the other), doesn't promote an insidious corporate image, sits qui...

Another level crossing collision, and a confessional driver?

From the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-16640983 Note the car driver's, probably unintended, confessional comments - my paraphrasing highlighted : Driver Sarah Frampton, 28, of St Newlyn East said she had not seen the warning and was "lucky to be alive". No-one was injured...

Re: Train on the streets

Although street running of passenger trains was rare in this country, elsewhere it is not only common but frequent. This is Nagasaki, where regular commuter trains run down a main road.

If you're taking a drink - take care!

A word of warning if you are planning on 'taking a drink' over Christmas and New Year. Here is one very lucky boozer: she could so easily have ended up like something being processed in an abattoir.
