Re: Southern Railway at exhibitions

I agree. I think I'm modelling a vaguely-Southern layout and would love to see more of it. I'm assuming a lot of stuff at exhibitions is scratchbuilt, but could the lack of Southern presence also be down to a lack of RTR stock? There's plenty of post-nationalisation Southern stock but not much in t...

Re: Engine Shed placement

Would there be any reasons for not siting an engine shed and associated sidings close to the goods shed and its sidings? understand they would need separate access roads, but could they be side by side? I'm thinking period LMS. I was just wondering whether all the dirt and ash from the engine servi...

Re: not enough southern railway info and locos

The Southern is reasonably well represented in the Steam preservation world. 86 of the 424 preserved steam locos are of SR origin. More than half of them are on Southern Railways with good stock lists at the following railways : Bluebell Railway = 13 Southern Locos , Mid Hants = 12 , Swanage = 5 ,Ke...

Re: Is the West Somerset railway good?

There is a Mixed Traction Weekend coming up shortly. The dates are 15th to 17th June. First Great Western is running a shuttle from Taunton station to Bishops Lydeard which is the first stop along the line. I believe a 150/2 will be used. The event will include 2 steam locos , 7828 & 6960 while ...

Re: Penzance themed modular layout in N gauge

This is the first time I've seen this work. Wonderfully simple idea , first class modelling.
The sea wall scene and the road backdrop are excellent.
Great job , keep it up !

Re: Underlay or no underlay?

On my last layout , i used a wall-lining material of paper backed polystyrene ,2mm thickness from memory.
The benefits I found were a suppression of noise and a better base for developing a camber for the ballast.
Pins will go through it without problem.

Hi Dave , I thought I'd corrected the links but I noticed that 2 were wrong.I've now put them right !
I think you'll find the 4th item down of interest as it shows a view of one end of the shed

Re: First Avenue - Modern OO Freightliner - Now with sound

Hi I think Southampton Maritime is an excellent choice of venue and I think there's enough activity to make a very interesting layout. Here are a few not too great shots from a visit I made in 2011.To give you a feel of activity , I was only there for about 20 minutes plus about 30 minutes on Redbri...

Re: What is all this 'F' about ? Any sense to it ???

As far as the LMR goes , the middle section in the range and arguably the most numerous , call it 5F was the domain of the Crabs (245 locos ) and the Black 5s (842 locos). Both were designated as "MT (Mixed traffic) " and whilst the Black 5s were truly MT , the Crabs were principally freig...

Re: Locomotive Allocations

I have the Ian Allen Locoshed Allocation for 1960/1961 referred to in B308's reply . You're picking 2 major regional sheds in Shrewsbury and Wolves and Oswestry was still hanging on to it's Cambrian hub title so we are talking a lot of locos here. Is there any class or group of locos you're particul...

Re: Swanage railway Diesel gala

I'm looking for the same info myself . The best I've found so far is from the Deltic Preservation Society's site :- The exam for the move to Swanage (D9009) is tomorrow morning and then the loco leaves on Wednesday from Barrow Hill (mid-morning) as part of a convoy. After stabling overnight in the M...
