Re: Platform Lights - O Gauge

Just to follow up.... the Peco platform lights, 7mm scale, it turns out have hollow posts. Using Layouts4u Nano LEDs there is a small slot either side of top locating pegs in the Peco lamp that the wires fit through nicely. The base for the actual lantern has two lugs for locating it, filing off one...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

And finally it's complete. The 'ICI' letters were easier to place than expected - rivet counting from a photo to the rescue! I soldered bits of left-over etch to the back to get the stand-off distance and clear the rivets. I think this looks about right. This kit certainly kept me occupied for a goo...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

So the brass rod arrived and was duly fitted. This took a long time with constant check-fitting and adjustment but it was well worth the effort when they line up neatly with the vac pipe casting. I wouldn't have had the patience a few years back... And then on with the handbrake wheels. Time to play...

Re: Temperature Controlled Soldering Station

I finished up with a Antex 690D, having struggled with my Weller WHS40. Both work well, but the Antex displays the actual tip temperature rather than a more or less guessing with the Weller's thumb-wheel control. Being 40W, the Weller struggles with any large brass assembly, and to be honest the Ant...

'Battleship Grey' ICI Bogie Hoppers

The colour for these wagons in TOPS era is referred to as 'Battleship Grey''. Simple to find. right? Well, as it turns out, no. Back in the days of yore battleship grey was battleship grey, but now.... egads, Sir. Does anyone know what the correct shade of grey should be on these at this time period?

Re: Dummy Locos

I used to sell s/h Land Rover spares, and it's a sad truth that parts make more than complete vehicles - I 'killed' many perfectly good cars to make more cash. I didn't like it, but gotta pay the bills. The Hornby tin plate boys and girls have the same thing going on, perhaps more business oriented ...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

After a diversion in the exciting world of traction (failed) back to the hopper. Wizard Models solved the rivet strip problem, the largest ones are pretty much an exact match for the kit supplied ones. DSC01261.resized.JPG With them fitted the outside now matches the photos, worth the effort I think...

Sentinel & DCC

So the Imprium chip turned up and off went the Sentinel to the bench for fitting, and the sand box refitting. DSC01255.resized.JPG Lift the coal out and there you go. It actually came out nicely without resorting to any level of applied violence. DSC01256.resized.JPG Then put the coal back, stick on...

Dapol O Gauge 'Sentinel' and Impirium Chip

Right, so the vanilla Imperium turned up, and installed all ok. The Sentinel can now move, well more limp, but.... no flickering firebox! I've been down the rabbit hole on 't web and, as far as I can make out what I have to do is 'connect' Aux 1 (Green wire) to F0, as in lights, and the world will b...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

In terms of entertainment hours used this is far and away the best value for money kit I've done. Before putting the end stanchions (if that's the word) in place I fitted all the half etch rivet detail. This took some time... Most was pretty obvious as to where it should go (and using photos), but t...

Dapol O Gauge 'Sentinel'

I don't do steam. Well, almost. I saw these when they first came out and kind of liked the BR Engineers version. Always in the back of my mind to operate the layout (more working diorama really) was the hassle of coupling/uncoupling, so I hatched a cunning plan - get an 03 to go with 08 and then jus...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

Body, meet chassis; Chassis, meet body. Tacked in place, and it fitted. Persuading the lugs to all be exactly in place involved going round with needle file, using the point reach in until they clicked in place - a large elastic band provided the pressure. You can see the outermost triangle supports...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

Adding the ribs, rivet etches and flitches (posh word for triangley support things, apparently). Quite how to approach this was somewhat up in the air. It would be nice to fit all three in one go at each point, but holding it all... So I went for fitting all the ribs, clean up, then the tops of the ...

Dapol O Gauge Sentinel DCC Sound

Apologies if this has been asked before, I did scan though the thread before posting! I (will shortly) have a Dapol O gauge Sentinel steam shunter thing and I'm looking for a sound decoder for it (21 pin I believe). Does anyone know of a sound file/decoder specifically for the Sentinel - or should I...

Re: ICI Bogie Hopper

...There's no 'suspension' but it runs just fine - it's interesting comparing it with the Queen Mary, the QM is sooo smooth in comparison... That's the trouble with refinement, once the effect is seen, the absence is noticeable. Then again, run empty they would be rather harsh riding - and increasi...
