Re: Westdale BG (NCV)
Armed with brake shoes, back to the bogies. Not unexpectedly they would not be a straight file and fit. After a good deal of staring I've come up with a plan to fit them. DSC02127.resized.JPG Each of the hangars has a part hollow tube cast in at the top, which look as though they should be drilled o...

Re: Garden rail reverse loop with no power
Time for my old favourite - the guitar string! Use the hole in the tie-bar and plant a bit of a string that holds the points the way you want them as 'normal', but flexes enough to reverse then when run through. A bit of trial an error to find the right combination of length and string gauge perhaps...

Re: Has the torrent of new RTR OO suppliers halted?
It's been interesting watching Ellis-Clark evolve from a tin-plate-a-like coarse scale O into a finescale O maker, a feat they seem to be managing well without all the expected re-branding marketing nonsense. In terms of OO, I've got them in the 'most likely to succeed long term and not end up being...

Re: Westdale BG (NCV)
All refreshed after a weekend of glorious sunshine, music and jollity, I've returned to planet Earth and normality. Ah, well... So, some plunder from MMP/David Parkins. I knew I'd seen Mk.1 corridor connectors somewhere (other than Dapol), and as usual found them after going for Plan B. At the price...

Re: Connoisseur Macaw B/Bolster C
Wishing to avoid getting into anything complicated, I thought doing the load for the bolster would fill a little time. As ever with 5 minute jobs... DSC02121.resized.JPG No, not T gauge bridges ;-) The pipe was donated by garden solar light that had shuffled of this mortal coil. And then back again....

Re: Canford Quay
Thanks for the tip Richard, added to my things to think about list. I've got some very fine wire, similar to fuse wire that I could use but don't know if it would be possible to paint and if it would actually show up. Given the scale guy ropes would likely be invisible. They're pretty invisible in ...

Re: Canford Quay
The trouble with RAAC is that in needed to be kept dry, otherwise a good idea. We learn by mistakes. Geoff T. RAAC was intended to have a fixed (short) life. It's use was conditional on everyone acknowledging that, and planning accordingly for replacement at around the 30 year mark. There is no sca...

Re: Westdale BG (NCV)
The bogies are assembled - right chunky things they are too, a very definite clickety-clack as the run a long. The round rods between the W irons should, it would appear, be flat bar so that makes modifying them a lot simpler. Still unable to find any brake shoes/hangars, there must be some somewher...

Re: Canford Quay
What I haven't decided on yet is guy ropes, the thinnest thread I can think of is cotton which is going to look like rope ! Dave Steel guitar strings would do the trick, top E strings specifically ( 0.010 inch). They also have the advantage that they don't kink easily so the guy ropes will look tig...

Re: Budget or Exquisite?
Oddly,I am surprised with all those 3D printers out there that people don't 3D print wagon parts to sell to others who are scratchbuilding would find useful. Buffers, couplings, wheels etc. Things that people need that would be slightly harder to make. There's a lot out there, e.g. Rumney Models ht...

Re: Budget or Exquisite?
I've been poking around looking at how the European market seems to work. Bear in mind in true British fashion I'm not multilingual to any worthwhile extent, so I have to go by what I see and GoogleTranslate, which isn't exactly a scientific methodology. Also pricing is only based on a very small sa...

Re: Westdale BG (NCV)
The Dapol corridor connectors and jumpers turned up today. After I'd ordered the jumpers I found some white metal castings of same (that happens every time a great search is on!) - it's kind of against my religion to use plastic (for no sensible reasons), but these Dapol jumpers are very neat. The c...

As you son likes shunting, perhaps a marshalling yard rather than goods yard might work?

Re: Why is "you get what you pay for" such a hard concept for people?
These comments are based on the recent Sam's Trains video "hrr drr Rapido's wagons are too expensive, let's do 3D printing for much cheaper". It's a bit disingenous to say the 3D wagons are cheaper because you have to buy the materials and a 3D printer (which depending on what level is pi...
