Re: Hornby R378 - 4-4-0 DCC install

depends on the base station, in effect the system sends out a data packet to the track every "x" time period - new instructions go out in the next packet. IIRC not every decoder instruction is in each packet but a new instruction will be. decoders usually stop if they don't see stuff for t...

Re: Hornby R378 - 4-4-0 DCC install

I know what you mean on "just give me a basic decoder!" the MX600 is four function, though outputs 0 & 1 are lights, 2 & 3 come out as "functions 1 & 2" (and can all be remapped anyway) for these locos I only need motor control, none have lights (I did fit a red tail ...

Re: 4PDT on on or on off on switch?

have used DPDT relays to swap between programming and running supplies to a siding without issue - the key bit is get the polarity the same for the two supply outputs. on-off-on has the advantage of being able to also isolate the siding if that matters. most switches are "break before make"...

Re: New Stanier Black 5

the silver paint looks like plastic painted silver - however as a wargamer I am used to this and the fix is extremely easy (so long as you don't mind adding a bit of paint) - get a black was and paint into the recesses, adds a lot of depth and can very quickly remove the painted plastic look (a fles...

Re: Woodland Scenic risers across baseboards

I know the stuff you mean, haven't used it but have used similar if you mean across board joins, and joins that will be dismantled more than "very rarely" I would suggest getting some thing ply (4-6mm) and cutting it to make an "end" for the polystyrene to protect it, could use 2...

Re: Hornby R378 - 4-4-0 DCC install

For now, try turning the inertia off on the decoder. Set it to zero or the lowest figure. If that doesn't work, try also turning the back EMF off as well. will give these a try, have had issues in N gauge with locos losing power and the decoder rebooting. inertia off doesn't prevent it but can mask...

Re: Hornby R378 - 4-4-0 DCC install

Managed to get a MX600R (with the plug removed) fitted, nicely in alongside the back of the CD motor and when she runs she runs well, issue with iffy track pick ups so occasional stalling - only having two tender wheels for one side likely not helping here. may look to either get a few more pickups ...

Re: Leopard Street, LNER 1930's

another slight change of plan, today I assembled the enclosure for the electrical power box http://www.aleopardstail.com/IMG_3067.JPG http://www.aleopardstail.com/IMG_3067.JPG made from an old Oak shelf, 1" thick, decent wood, took an age to cut - about 3" deep, 10" wide and 12" ...

More wood butchery, have been out most of the day so only a few bits Board "B" had gained its scenic deck and lower track deck, upper deck cut (needs the stripwood cutting and gluing before its installed) http://www.aleopardstail.com/IMG_3063.JPG http://www.aleopardstail.com/IMG_3063.JPG s...

though it is a good way to see if a decoder is fitted or not, put it on the track and remove anything that begs for mercy

Re: Leopard Street, LNER 1930's

Bit more progress, first up all but one of the folding electrical panels are now installed, the other is being used as a bit of a shelf and will probably get done over the weekend. then ready to start wiring the bus lines when the rest of the connectors arrive. had been working out how to retain the...

Re: New to DCC

best bet, find some track offcuts, wire a controller to it (croc clips or similar are fine, for set track (get a double straight from eBay if needed) can jam the wires into the holes below the rails. good enough for "will it move yes/no", could also cradle one on its back, wheels in the ai...

Re: The BNR (another way)

last time I had one, about 20 years back, was from a trainset, got converted to a Y class shunter, wagon attached with wires and a DCC decoder inside it. the extra pickups made it good and mucking with CV values tamed the speed even looked after decent after some bodywork mods, fun project when they...

Re: The BNR (another way)

oh for sure they will run faster, especially when not run at full speed. and for the little 0-4-0 chassis is it even possible to run at full speed? does anyone have a dead straight track that long? just amuses me to see they design stuff with brushes that wear and wear that quickly when there are mo...
