Re: So, My First Ever Layout Starts ....

Now having second thoughts about layout. Was intending on a freight / passenger mix, with a station as in the picture. But I’m thinking freight only would give me far more scope for rolling stock / engines / layout.

Hmmmmm.....

Re: So, My First Ever Layout Starts ....

Interesting trackplan there, Blueday, and what seems to be acres of space! Will it be DCC or DC controlled? DCC using RM. the track plan is really just out of my head stuff. There is still space as you say, will probably formulate ideas as I go. Went to the MRE in Sheffield yesterday to get some id...

Re: So, My First Ever Layout Starts ....

Hey Jim Yeh the curved points can be temperamental but so far so good. The track isn’t fully fixed down yet so that should help. I’ll try and get a track plan uploaded, but basically too left of the plan the 2 lines disappear under the eaves and reappear at the back. My plan is to construct a tunnel...

So, My First Ever Layout Starts ....

Hi all. Been about 40 years planning (I’m 51  ) but finally I’ve got started in my own model railway. Started out a year ago with not much of a clue what I was doing, but reading this forum and some others, asking questions and taking tips on board I’ve finally got a basic layout down. I’ll...

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

If your layout plan needs flexitrack, then my suggestion would be to go solely flexitrack. You get a far better range of better points, and - you don't read this very often - not only is it better, but also if bought cannily usually works out cheaper for any layout taking up more space than 8' x 4'...

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

Thanks guys.

Still playing around with ideas. Got a ‘set’ idea down now but I keep changing little things here and there (no bad thing).

Regarding flexi track, it’s defo gonna be necessary. Due to the complexities of the space available.

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

Hope you’re well Chris.

Yeh happy to duck under. I’ve got quite a bit of the plan up and running as a test - not fixed anything down yet just testing. I’m just trying to do the best with what space I have.

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

So I’ve made a start on a track plan, done a basic loop around the full extent of the layout and laid the track to test it - so far so good.

I’ve got the track plan in SCARM but not sure I can post it here ........

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

Hi Chris.

I have thought of a raised section but thinking, as a newbie, maybe a step too far?

I like your idea of an out of sight fiddle yard and losing the small freight

Re: Looking for Help / Ideas Please

While first radius curves turn on a board width of 3ft (Only just!) You really could do with 3½ft wide boards to turn a semicircle of track. I've always planned by taking some track and laying it out to measure where it fits, but this is not possible if you dont have any track to start with. We do ...
