Re: Choosing a DCC Controller

Thanks for all this help chaps. It looks like the best bet is to try out and compare different systems but for the foreseeable future that is a non-starter. [I have just been reading an interview with the World Health Organization assistant director general Bruce Aylward in "New Scientist"...

Choosing a DCC Controller

I know this topic is likely to arouse a lot of debate but hopefully a consensus will emerge. What is a good entry level controller for a convert from DC to DCC? I could start with a Hornby or Bachmann but it seems daft to spend money on a controller which will need to be replaced as my layout gets m...

Re: New Range announcements

Bit disappointing in some ways but it was interesting to see my dad's 1938 Gresley A4 trainset, which I had great fun playing with in Penicuik, in the range though I don't think DCC readiness was part of the package. It also had 3 rails. A lot of pricey stuff which if they only do limited runs may n...

Re: Limited edition Black 5 - a bit of a puzzle

In that case, I think the model is just using whatever tooling they available, the one:one aspect of it is, I believe, just that its a model of a loco in the one:one collection. The Black 5 and Bittern being the 1st of the collection stored in the old Hornby factory. I too initially thought that be...

Re: Limited edition Black 5 - a bit of a puzzle

Is this the one:one edition? I don't really know enough to comment on how accurate it is, but it certainly looks a nice model. I did have the one:one Bittern on pre-order, then decided I shouldn't really and cancelled it, but now regret it. Yep. That's the one. I have never come across the One:One ...

Limited edition Black 5 - a bit of a puzzle

I had an e-mail about the limited edition Black 5 - apparently there are only 1000. Is this the model Hornby did for the NRM in a different guise? I seem to remember reading somewhere that Hornby's Black 5 left something to be desired and I assume that it was this model that was criticized. Seems od...

DCC control of points and signals - guidance for an idiot

I am thinking of amending my planned layout from DC to DCC, partly because I'm a complete wally when it comes to wiring  and I want to run several locomotives simultaneously. I have found out about decoders and the rest from various sources and I gather it is possible to control points and sig...

Re: Bachmann no longer list Hattons as a stockist

Presumably Rails of Sheffield will be the next to be targetted, then Kernow etc etc . The question is who will be selling Bachmann - and bearing in mind their approach and the likely knock-on effect on pricing, who will be buying? Sometimes the way "businessmen   " run their busi...

Re: Are the Hornby Schools and Merchant Navy class any good?

You're endangering my savings Biggles! I hadn't even looked at the Castle and King class locos despite the fact they are on my wishlist. The trouble is I am basing my layout on Oxford - very much simplified - where all four companies met so you could see Great Western, Southern, LMS and LNER ...

Re: First time model loco buyer, any tips/advice please.

Thanks Biggles for this information.
With Black Fives all over the BR network it made sense to look into getting one at some point. Now I think I will wait to see if Hornby retool it.

Re: Are the Hornby Schools and Merchant Navy class any good?

Thanks for all this help. It looks like the unrebuilt Merchant Navy might be worth adding and leave the Schools class till later. I have just received a Bachmann Halls class loco from Hattons which is the first GWR loco I have bought for about 20 years. Comparing these with my current collection of ...

Are the Hornby Schools and Merchant Navy class any good?

I have just yielded to temptation and bought the new Lord Nelson class 'Sir Francis Drake' and one of the King Arthur class and they both seem very good. So now is it worth complementing them with one of the Schools and Merchant Navy classes. Did Hornby do completely new retools or are they older mo...

Re: Could somebody explain the difference between couplings?

Thanks guys for taking the time to explain this so thoroughly. I think I will stick to the couplings that are supplied. I seem to remember reading someone complaining in one of the magazines about Hornby and Bachmann coupling systems not being as compatible as they should be, so I might try running ...

Could somebody explain the difference between couplings?

I keep coming across references to different types of couplings like Kadee and NEM. What is the difference and which is best for OO guage?

Any guidance gratefully received!
