That's what everybody seems to say. But alas, mine are simply not in the same league. Anyhow, all is not lost - I know I've got some GT85 in the shed somewhere ...

I really don't fancy that, thank you.

Re: How to improve the free running of my carriages?

Good point about the b2b, but on checking I find that they're all under rather than over. I don't see how it's possible to fit brass bushes to these bogies, but I'd forgotten about the GT85!

Onwards and hopefully upwards ...

Re: S15 woes

Cheers Bigmet. I now seemed to have solved the loco issue, as you may see from my other witterings this morning, but I'm still not there with the coaches ...

How to improve the free running of my carriages?

I have five s/h Hornby Maunsell corridor coaches (R4300, R4318, R4298 and 2 x R4297), none of which run as freely as I would like. My reference for running is my Bachmann Mk1s, any of which I could place on a piece of track and use instead of a spirit level. To illustrate the point, if I put one on ...

Re: Southern loco suggestions needed (again)

Oh happy day! :) I've discovered that my N Class will just manage all five Maunsell corridors going one way round my "main line"! I hadn't realised that the gradient's very slightly easier at one end of the raised bit, but I can live with the long train only running in one direction if I h...

Re: Southern loco suggestions needed (again)

Thinking further about this, I need to do some more testing with my existing locos. I also need to think again about how realistic the plan is to run a 5/6 coach train on this raileway with these Hornby Maunsells that definitely aren't as free-running as the Bachmann Mk1s. Another consideration is l...

Re: S15 woes

Hmmm ... so spare S15 motors are widely available. I wonder why ... Whatever, I started the Ebay return routine yesterday and have already been notified that the seller's done the refund, including p&p, so it's all packed now ready to go back as soon as I get the label. The S15's a lovely...

Re: Wearable magnifying glasses suggestions?

I use a cheap rip-off of the Optivisor, which was under £20 off Ebay. Works a treat, comortable to wear, comes with lenses from 1.5x to 3.5x, and unlike the genuine artciles, those lenses are glass! FWIW the technicians at our local dental lab use exactly the same item.

Southern loco suggestions needed (again)

Which steam-outline Southern loco would you go for given a need to reliably pull 5 or 6 Hornby Maunsell corridor coaches up a slow incline which has a curve on it? To give you some idea of that gradient, a Bachman K3 will reliably manage 6 Bachmann Mk1s up it or 16 coal wagons plus brake van, but my...

S15 woes

Well, my, love affair with the Hornby S15 didn't last long. £70 off Ebay, cosmetically 100%, ran like a dream and the only fault was a droopy rear coupling à la Dapol. However, after running faultlessly for maybe an hour, it started slowing down every now and then. After another 20 minutes it was sl...

Re: Southern Railway carriages - which ones?

Cheers Bigmet. Yep, Rule One always applies, but in my case that includes running everything in pristine condition and having an aversion to inconsistencies which wouldn't trouble me in the slightest in real life. A parcels van should be here shortly, btw. Incidentally, with Mr Parkes having kindly ...

Re: Southern Railway carriages - which ones?

Blimey Mike! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to post that. Now I actually know what I'm after :) Funnily enough, after a very dodgy start, it seems to be my lucky day today, for no sooner had I posted above about S15 prices than I spotted an "as new" black Southern S15 on Ebay for...
