Re: Air Drying Clay
Interesting. I've never "home-made" the stuff. If lead-time wasn't an issue I'd want to try it, but I'd want to make a small batch to see how it stood up to a bit of time. Crack resistance, mould resistance, especially compared to commercial material such as DAS (I've got stuff 20 years ol...

I'm still bashing holes in skulls, and getting my little Zomlings moving.
Behind schedule, but I may get there tomorrow.

(I have 2 doors in my house lower then my height, and I'm 5ft 10 ½". Pretty old house.)

Re: Steam loco or space rocket ?
Chris, I spotted a motor a week or two ago which had the standard 3mm with flat shaft but apart from the first few mm had been turned down to 2mm diameter. I think it might have been a 5-6 volt type but you can always swap the gearbox with whichever voltage you want. Can't remember which dealer it ...

Re: h0 building kits
I got a nice batch of Miniart building kits which are nominally 1:72 but at that scale they seem a bit small. They go together very well and the smaller ones are fairly location non-specific (though changing the roof tiles helps for the UK) Not too pricey, especially if used as half-relief. Have a l...

Re: Steam loco or space rocket ?
Anyone determined to take on one of these chassis with the simplest engineering, could do worse than buying a 12volt, 60rpm N20 format gear motor from eBay along with a 3mm bore pinion and crown wheel with a two or three to one ratio. No problem getting it in the body of even the GWR tank. Should g...

My layout is being built in a very small box room.,.,., , so I'm sticking with 00...better for my old eyes anyway! This is where OO9 can score. There are expensive ways of getting into this but some much cheaper ones too, for example marrying economical 3D printed bodies to compact economical Kato ...

Re: Layout Advice Please
Hi, Attached is my first draft of a layout for an N gauge board.... but for now, the general layout is up for comment. Thanks Hello sjgarth Can I ask the size of board you show, along with the radii of the curves? I understand you already have one train: how long is that? Unless already purchased, ...

... if people thought that they couldn't afford to join us in this great hobby we have. There's an odd touch of Catch-22 here, because while there are definitely a range of cheap ways of pursuing the hobby, they are most open to those who already have a degree of modelling and "bodging" e...

Either i am getting use to it or it is improving enjoyed this weeks steampunk layout a lot of fun and why not kevin sharpe It was a bit better. The team that most tried to build an operating railway, as opposed to using the train as a pointer to where the next animation was, got into the most troub...

6ft is long enough for a classic inglenook shunter arrangement, using American boxcar lengths, designs using a set-back fiddle yard, or odder things, many of which can be found on Carl Arendt's wonderful site for small to near-microscopic layouts.

Re: Chris Brown (Emettman)'s workbench
The green loco is now running sweetly. The only half-sensible use I can see for the size is as a fairground "children's railway in O." On OO track and scale the loco and coaches could do nicely for a Hobbit railway in the Shire. A thought literally as I was typing this. would it marry to a...

Re: Chris Brown (Emettman)'s workbench
Halloween approaches, and I need something cheap and easy to make a (new) window display. (Not being flush with either money or energy, the second being on the tighter budget) Likely answers for this year: I've got a couple of near life-size skulls on the estimate, which is looking good, that I shou...

Re: Garden Railway Woes
I am bad enough now with the track at floor level, so some sort of 'hinged track' is a possibility. I built a lifting bridge (one end pivot) on my previous railway which worked well, even carrying current across it. Depending on the height of the track, a garden gate is a possibility. (track alignm...
