The Botched Release Crossover

Hi Emettman, Thank you for your comment on the crossover! I have enclosed a close up of the modification for general interest. P1140103.JPG I shortened the curved rails on both switches and removed the angled crossties. Metal fishplates soldered the lot together and then the rails were cut with Drem...

American running and that crossover

First off I need to show you the finished release crossover at the end of the switch lead to the main Terminal. This was the subject of my tutorial style post earlier. Its an American month so my weathered US outline is on display. P1140095.JPG The seemingly discarded rails to the left are actually ...

Reconfiguration of small terminal

As promised, Its Picture time! The small terminal over the workbench was a problem. Three platforms, and no release crossover. The terminal doubled as the switch lead or head shunt for the freight sidings. Platform length was not good. It needed reworking. I also was not happy with the station throa...

Re: Garage Wall Freelance Running Layout Ho Scale

Whoo Whoo Allegheny1600 Thank you for your kind comments. its been a while since I posted and so much has happened interim I need to catch up. Firstly to answer your question about the V60. Its an Hobbytrain. It has a TCS KAT22 inside instead of the weight in the long hood. The slightly reduced trac...

Re: Garage Wall Freelance Running Layout Ho Scale

I then proceeded to lift the second track, and cleared away the ballast. An old chisel comes in very handy for this! P1130777.JPG P1130778.JPG The track was tested in position and holes drilled for the wiring. P1130780.JPG I power my live frogs and therefore solder the wires to the bottom of the rai...

Re: Garage Wall Freelance Running Layout Ho Scale

Hi Guys and Gals, I am back! Another instalment of the ever evolving Railway in the Garage. This time, in pictures, the story of my new crossover. P1130769.JPG The installation needed to go right next to the three way on the adjacent tracks. This then would provide a release for the switching Locomo...

Re: Garage Wall Freelance Running Layout Ho Scale

Hello fourtytwo, Thanks for your interest! Where you get 3x1 from? The joists have always been 4x1 to clear the Tortoise switch machines! Also, I have bought expensive structural timber this time. The layout is not a Lightweight portable so weight is not a factor. I have had problems with 1x2 joists...

The screws made a bit of damage to ballast, but that's not a problem.
Only the rewire to do now after installing the new timbers across my original cable runs, hence the spaghetti in the frame!

Re: Sagging ply tops - solution

Hi everyone, If you been following, my 9mm ply top baseboard sagged between cross members. Well I could not wait for the spring, The weather over the weekend is mild, so I bit the bullet and started on the new supporting structure. No 3 board is the worst offender, under the freight sidings by the s...

Re:Sagging

Right chaps, decision made. In the spring, a new supporting frame for the layout in 1x4. This is because I have discovered that the carriage sidings, together with other parts of the layout, are starting to distort. I will use the original tops with the layout details and track on. All I have to do ...

Re: Preowned windfalls

Are you going to paint them all green and decal for GWR? Seriously though, its surprising what you can pick up. Recently off the bay I have had 20 year old locos, Brand new in box never run Fleischmann, for about the same prices. I have saved over 75% on new! I guess they just got collected an...

Re: Garage Wall Freelance Running Layout Ho Scale

MMM, good idea Bufferstop. I'll look into that one. Maybe I need to start a new thread entitled "wagon brakes in 1:87 scale" ! see what everyone else comes up with too. I bet there are other layouts out there with similar problems to mine. I use Kadee couplers. I have magnets under the tra...
