Re: LMS short wheelbase coaches?
They would have inherited short bogie, 6 wheel, and a few 4 wheel coaches from their constituent pre-grouping companies (LNWR, MR, NSR, FR, CR, HR, GSWR etc.) but to my knowledge they didn't build anything shorter than the standard 57' for passenger carrying coaches. Inherited 4 wheel coaches were r...

Re: Repainting and Varnish advice needed
This is my choice of varnish https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pebeo-Solvent- ... ast_sto_dp it says for acrylic colours, but I use it on everything, it works great, doesn't even react with the methylcyclohexane/ethanol based gold I use for lining.

Perhaps more helpfully for the general GWR modeller, in the smallprint Dapol also announced they were working on releasing the much more widespread corridor toplights as well.

Re: Lake District: Locomotives from the 20s/30s
My word. A plethora of candidates. Thanks all. Another question. In general, how does one distinguish between goods and passenger locomotives? Very, very generally, goods engines have relatively smaller wheel diameters than passenger engines. The wheel arrangement can be a clue, 0-8-0s, 2-8-0s, 0-6...

Re: Lake District: Locomotives from the 20s/30s
Ok so apologies if any of the following is teaching granny to suck eggs. Pre-1923 there were over 120 different railway companies in Great Britain, some large, some small. Each had their own designs of locos to cover the various duties, so the range of classes must have been truly mind-numbing! In 1...

Re: Which Bogies?
The thing with coach bogies as makeshift wagon underframes, is that they tend to look exactly like that. Depends how fussy you are about that sort of thing. Of the three choices there, I'd probably go for the LMS ones, the B4 bogies are quite modern looking and quite expensive, the Dublo ones are ve...

Random stonework is always difficult, the random sheets are never the same random as what you want! Anyway, I'm sure you'll make it look just right.

Re: A new start in Finescale OO: NSR Stone junction station
It has a lot of lateral movement, and also in theory vertical, although in fact it only has about 0.5mm of that as otherwise it fouls on the body. At the moment it keeps falling off when I push it along the rails, and I'm not sure where to start. Any ideas please? I'm guessing some sort of spring a...

Re: A new start in Finescale OO: NSR Stone junction station
I still haven't lined out the other side, but my B class now has wheels! https://i.ibb.co/c6CFQXx/B-class-rolling.jpg First time I've had to source chassis bits from scratch, so thought I'd do a bit of a run-down on what exactly it is you need to buy, because if you're not familiar with it, it can b...

Check that there's not a thick sludge at the bottom, but yes, I strongly suspect you do have weathering paints which are intended to be wishy washy. Sorry

Re: WHAT IF?
I haven't been looking at exhibition listings lately but I did see at the Lavender Line last weekend they have an opening date of April 2021. I can't remember the exact date they had posted outside though. Thanks End2end Yep, many heritage railways are looking at re-opening after the 12th April res...

Re: WHAT IF?
The big events require organisation many many months in advance, so it probably depends how optimistic those big event organisers were some months ago about when restrictions would ease. I could certainly see the return of a few local village hall sized model railway exhibitions by the Autumn as lon...

Re: Dimensions of british locomotives
The side panel on the Wikipedia article for each class of rolling stock is usually good for that sort of thing, ... For me the advantage of a single table or page is that one can sort it and then answer the question "What locomotives (etc.) have wheel bases under twenty feet?" or "wh...
