Re: Irresponsible Blogging

OK folks, I started this thread, by and large there seems to be a consensus of opinion. I'm going to put the brakes on it now, before it goes down the route we see on other sites.
Thanks for your opinions.

Re: Dad-1 - Workbench - West Bay Wagon Works

A bit more than simply "should not be shocked". The body to chassis fixing allowed the body to move to mitigate the worst of any shock. The van bodies would be six inches shorter than their standard counterpart, allowing up to three inches of movement against the shock absorbing mechanism....

Re: Irresponsible Blogging

Now for a real lapse of judgement, it was a cable contractor who needed to get into the space between the tops of the racks and the ceiling in a telephone switch room. As it was a real ancient installation the busbars were covered in tubes of "American Cloth" the stuff the table cloths wer...

Re: How much space is required.

Unless you are in possession of a large hall or aircraft hanger the answer is all most certainly, far more than you have. The diagram which isn't necessarily to scale gives the main dimensions in "chains' yards and feet" a chain being 22yds or 66ft. I've actually surveyed using a chain and...

Sounds like he's suffering from over estimating his capabilities. I'm sure a lot of us try to ignor anno dominii, but in business you have to be realistic and only promise what you know you can deliver.

Re: Derry's Yard - A Set-Track shunting loop Project

When I first descended from the loft my layout went in "the guest bedroom" so had to be capable of being stored out of the way. I took over one of the built in cupboards, and by sticking to a board length of four feet I could fit the whole lot standing on end in there, with a couple of she...

Re: Derry's Yard - A Set-Track shunting loop Project

I'll remember those Geoff, first bit is to maximise the use of the existing hardware, I may play with a second fan to encourage the mist to lift. I've seen a layout in which a terrace of houses had chimneys belching smoke, it involved a large home made heater/evaporator in a box with a fan to push i...

Nice job in the end. You may have felt bad about the imperial/metric confusion but not as bad as the guy at NASA who entered the altitude in feet instead of metres.

Re: Location?

Any date for the photo, as in time of year, it could be the effect of smoke from stubble burning and a rather long exposure. Given a date you might match it to an article and thus a location.

Re: Derry's Yard - A Set-Track shunting loop Project

I missed the bit about the smoke generator, fitted to a loco or for background effects? I've never been very impressed by the "smoke" they produce, looks too much like a smouldering fag-end to me. I'm about to redesign a real powerful smoke (and flame) generator that sits in our lounge. Th...

Both happen on a 2D screen. In 2D animation the objects that are animated don't have any depth in 3D animation the objects represented have depth and can be rotated about any axis to reveal a different view or elevation. 2D animation will look like a moving drawing 3D will be more photo realistic ev...

I'm hoping that the upcoming relaxation of Covid countermeasures will lead to a resumption of boot sales and 'church hall' exhibitions. There are often bargains to be had from the trays that stay under the counter, especially if the seller is prepared to do a little 'horse trading' Hornby Dublo sign...

It's surprising how you develop a nose for dodgy users, mine got really well tuned after a dozen years running a network in an F&HE College. It starts twitching as soon as I see some combinations of ID and Email address, If you are interested in on line security Google "The Onion Router&quo...

Re: Electrical connections between coaches

Why do "interesting pictures" disappear when you want them. I recently saw a picture showing one full size answer to inter coach connections. It was a 25Kv AC railbus equipped for multiple working. So that each coach could draw its power from one pantograph (it can affect the quality of co...
