Re: The Welton Layout - FOR SALE! New video & photos

If this was my era interest then I would definitely consider buying half the layout. I mean, obviously the whole thing would be ideal, but what are the odds of finding a room that is exactly the right dimensions and is available etc? Buying a straight or L-shaped layout would be far easier to manage...

Re: PeakDale 80's 90's Modern Image

Those resprays look top notch. Especially liking the bacchy 47's, I would pay good money to have one or two of those...

Re: Birmingham New Street in P4

Amazing stuff as ever.

Did you have to modify the peaks bogies at all to accept the P4 wheel sets?

Thanks

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

Rice seems to use an older style technique in his track building - using 2mm rivets punched into the required sleepers and then soldering the rails to this. It seems to be more commonplace now to either use a plastic sleeper and chair + butanone combination, or an all copperclad construction with co...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

Ah, thankyou for clearing that up. I guess there's no reason why I shouldn't have a crack at P4 then! Maybe the difficulty in P4 that I was hearing of was more aimed towards the steam modelling aspect, especially bigger locos. Rice's book should arrive today, so I *should* stop asking so many questi...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

So what is the point of EM if P4 is just as achievable? Is it then a problem of wheel flanges ie. you can get away with slightly crappier wheels in EM? I will try and make it to a meeting. I am already sold on the idea of P4 track, it just looks superb, it is more a case of whether it is viable to m...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

Ok, so its like building a regular EM point, just with a slightly wider gauge. Just from reading up on the subject, it has been made out that if P4 track is not accurate to the atom, it will not work. So you think I should give it a go then? Yes I would be swapping the wheels anyway, I've been meani...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

I've begun to realise this as I've been planning out the track plan full size on the baseboards. 18" is not wide at all. And as you say, the pointwork is a lot bigger. I'm still playing around with templot to get a track plan that I like. So, P4 points are no harder than EM? Is it just that the...

Re: 1st step into EM trackbuilding

Thank you very much, that is most helpful. I have bought Rice's book so that should help a great deal. I can't wait to get stuck in... as the baseboards for my new layout are complete, naturally want to get cracking on with the track! Patience will be key though, I'm sure there will be a lot of tria...

Re: 1st step into EM trackbuilding

Thanks for the tips. I forgot to mention that I was using the C&L website. Yes I would like to start with copper clad pointwork, and I feel I'm up for the challenge. I have to start somewhere, right? And yes I would like to have a go at making the crossing vee and blades, I've done metalworking ...

1st step into EM trackbuilding

Hi all, My last layout was in peco 00 and while it ran fine, I felt like the aesthetics were a bit off. The look of some EM and P4 layouts really appealed to me so I thought I'd have a go! After many weeks reading up on the subject of handbuilt track I feel I have a reasonable grasp on it, but feel ...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

I live in Derby for 3/4 of the year so Buxton wouldn't be that much of a trek for me to actually visit and get a few shots myself, but as you say there are already a lot on the web. I thought about modelling Derby but like didcot its a junction and I'd have to change too much of it to actually name ...

Re: Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

Thanks for the ideas guys! I do like the look of buxton. Getting it in such a small space would be a challenge but doable I think. While I do like Didcot, and travel there often, I think it would be a bit out of my reach unfortunately. Unless you've seen something similar been done then I'd like to ...

Modern Image Layout (Prototype?)

Having finished the baseboards for the new layout, which are 12' by 18", I find my self staring at it and thinking - what on earth am I going to do?! There's just so much real estate, and I have so many ideas, its difficult to decide what I actually want to model when it comes down to it. So I ...
