Re: Ply vs. MDF and is bracing avoidable??
I just used the planed softwood. Don't remember seeing the redwood and it looks as though it just has a better finish, but as you're not going to decorate it I don't see it's necessary. The main thing is to check that the wood is straight and true.

Re: Ply vs. MDF and is bracing avoidable??
Most people use 2x1 bracing, which roughly equates to the 44mx18mm size. That's what I've used throughout.

Re: Ply vs. MDF and is bracing avoidable??
I'm now thinking: http://www.wickes.co.uk/Exterior-Birch-Plywood/invt/164521 with bracing every 12-18 inches Yep - that's the stuff I used although the 9mm thickness. It has 7 layers bonded together, rather than the 3 of the cheaper stuff. This item is an 8ftx4ft board and I don't believe Wickes wi...

Re: Redline's Hornby N15 Review
The Hornby N15 DCC: If you bought a DCC fitted locomotive then this section is not of much use to you, but if you are looking to convert a DCC ready locomotive then this might help. In order to get into the locomotive you must remove the screw under the front bogie and then the screw under the loco...

Re: Ply vs. MDF and is bracing avoidable??
Ook, so I think instead of just 6mm ply with 12mm MDF, i'll go for 9mm MDF with some nice bracing. I really would recommend you spend that little bit extra and use 9mm Birch ply instead of MDF. It will be half the weight, but because it's several layers bonded together internally it is much stronge...

Re: Ply vs. MDF and is bracing avoidable??
9mm Birch ply, braced at at least 18inch intervals, will give the best foundation. Bracing will keep the board stiff. An 8ft long board will be extremely difficult to manage, assuming you can get it into the house! If you compromise on your width a bit, then three 4ftx2ft 8in boards can be cut at a ...

Re: The Hornby Q1
Mine runs very well forwards but occassionally sticks in reverse when running slowly. It is sensitive to not having clean wheels but does have tender pickups too. I well remember them as a youngster and have fond memories of bunking Tonbridge shed one Sunday afternoon. There were 7 Q1s on shed that ...
