Guide to Model Railway Spares

Introduction

From time to time something on your favourite model will break and you need a replacement part. So where do you go?

Each manufacture deals with spares differently, some better than others. To point you in the right direction I have written this Guide to Model Railway Spares.

Hornby Spares

Hornby spares are available to any Hornby Hobbies retailer but in reality there are only a few shops that specialise in Hornby spares. Hornby publish service sheets for each locomotive they make which lists all the available spares. A list of Hornby service sheet can be found here.
In general Hornby do not produce spares and service sheets for coaches and bodies, but saying that Hornby do not make spares for coaches and wagons is not completely correct. Wheels, couplings and some coach bogies are available although this is very much the exception to the rule.

At the bottom of the service sheet you will see a table of all the locomotives and their relevant spares. The picture will help in the selection of the correct part. If the part you need does not have a number assigned then it is not available as a spare. In general the following parts are not available as a spare: Metal Chassis, Double bogie drive chassis, Model Bodies.

Selecting the correct spare can require some significant investigation. You will need to piece together the available information before you make a purchase. If you’re having trouble then best to contact a retailer that specialises in model spares such as New Modellers Shop (Tel 01733 704502). They will be able to take what information you have and narrow down the search to a specific spare.

For older Hornby models you can search Hornby Railways Collectors Guide for service sheets. I find if you search for the running number you get the best results.

Bachmann, Graham Farish and Liliput Spares

Bachman Group manages their spares in-house. If you have a problem with a Bachmann model you can either ring them on 01455 841756 and ask to speak to service, e-mail on service@bachmann-europe.co.uk or your Bachmann retailer can order them for you. Post and packing charges are between 2.00-3.00. Bachmann would need to know the loco type, scale, model number or running number, in order for them to check for available stocks. They do not have spares for any wagons or coaching. Bachman group service sheets can be found here.

Dapol Spares

Dapol Spares and repairs are carried out by DCC Supplies. Contact them first to get a returns number and the free post address.

Spares Questions:

Where to get spares from?

Please read the information provided above for the manufacture of your model.

When will they make more spares?

Spares are normally the result of additional production. They are not normally made for the sole purpose of being spares. For this reason spares normally become available just before or after a new model is produced that contains that spare. Check the manufactures pre-order list to see when that model will next be produced.

What spares are not available?

Chassis and Bodies are not available as a spares. Spares for Coaches and wagons are also not available with a few exceptions (wheels and couplings).

Where can I get hold of a service sheet for my model?

Hornby service sheet can be found here. Bachman group service sheets can be found here.

What information will be helpful in finding the correct spare? What information do I need to start my search for a spare?

Product Number, Locomotive Running Number, Colour and livery, Year it was made, All of this will help narrow down the search.

  • Product Code: This can be found on the box your model comes in. Hornby codes start with the Letter "R"

  • Running Number: Where the product code is not available the running number can help identify your model

  • Livery: This is the colour of the model. It also includes any writing on the model. Again where the product code is not available this can can help identify your model

  • Models Age: Don't worry if you don't know the exact age. Just a rough idea can help in the search for your model. This will for example help us decide whether it is a 3-pole or 5-pole motor. This affects the wheels gears and motor armature you will require.

My models product code is not listed on the service sheet. Will the spares be the same?

Hornby don’t always release their updated service sheets. so you may need to take an educated guess. Compare your model to that of the service sheet. Most if not all mechanical parts will be common to all models of the class. Wheels and accessories and bogies may be coloured to match a specific livery so you will need to find a spare listed for your models livery.

The part has a number on it but I can’t find a corresponding spare?

The numbers on the parts do not relate to the part number. if only it was that simple :)
