Connoisseur GWR 16 ton brake van
Connoisseur GWR 16 ton brake van
While I wait for more Flying Scotsman bits to arrive it's time to dig something out of the unbuilt kit pile.
A Connoisseur GWR 16 ton brake van.
These are the bits.
One thing about this kit is there are hundreds of rivets to push out. A gravity riveter like this is jolly handy.
These are the parts that make up the basic box of the body.
The edges of the ends fold round to join with the sides.
Here's the surprisingly shiny body made up,

This is looking very good! Could you please tell me the diameter of your threaded rod? I would love to make a riveter like that!

Lovely modelling thanks for posting.

It's 6mm. Despite its somewhat home made appearance I didn't make it. I bought it from Eileen's Emporium.rosenblad wrote:This is looking very good! Could you please tell me the diameter of your threaded rod? I would love to make a riveter like that!

Thank you SirMeliot. I will fire up my lathe in the very near future!

With the detail can we establish if this "O" guage?
I like 6mm because the thread pitch is 1mm, and it is possible to be
quite accurate for any homebrew jig built with it.
I am in the throws of a small x-y table for a project using 6mm threaded
rod. I mention this because several riveting jigs have an adjustable table
mounted on them to accurately place the rivets when they are not marked
in the etch.
In the way this riveter works, I doubt if the size of the threaded rod
is critical.

Yep, it's O gauge.
The sole bars and top rails of the body.
The sole bars were a bit awkward to bend as they're narrow. I ended up forming one bend at 90° and the other at 45° then putting the piece into the bending bars flat and nipping them up to push both bends to 90°
Curiously the outer framing goes on before the sole bars. Looks more like a brake van now.
Something to be careful with this kit is that the veranda end is prone to bending until the top rails are fitted. The gap between the door and body is a good indicator of how straight things are.

Try ebay item 150460538826
Making your own x-y table and rivet tool is certainly
a worthwhile project.

That's a GW rivet press. A fine bit of kit, but that auction is currently up to £152 and a brand new one is only £85noel wrote:+

If only these idiots would do a little research before they hit that 'confirm' button. I was quoted £96.80 P&P included, I didn't get it, 7mm scale to large (not enough space) for me. Looks like they're going to pay £50.00 for a piece of plywood what a bunch of dip-sticks.....
COLIN.

Stuck some lamp irons and sole bars on.
Sole bars are tacked at the moment so I can get them properly vertical before fixing them properly.

Wow, last post was in July!
Anyway, thanks to the arrival of a pair of Bill Bedford handrail bending jigs:
I've stuck the handrails on. Would not be a fun job without the jigs....
Added the running boards too.
