Connoisseur 040 'Nellie' Starter Kit

Post by SirMeliot »

Since I' starting to like the whole soldering bits of brass together thing I decided to buy another O gauge loco kit.
This is Connoiseur's starter kit (linky). It's loosely based on an LSWR C14 the same as the old Triang Nellie/Polly loco and makes the same simplification of omitting the outside cylinders. At £60 it's as cheap as O gauge loco kits get, though you need to add £38 for the motor & gearbox and another £30 or so for the wheels.

So here we are. All the parts are here except for the wheels and plunger pickups. (The kit has parts to fabricate wiper pickups but the instructions recommend Slaters plunger pickups.) There's a single brass etch, pre-rolled boiler and a bunch of whitemetal castings. Even figures for the crew are included.

Making a start, the parts for the footplate are cut from the etch.

There are no locating tabs here and the buffer beams aren't quite symmetrical and need to go a certain way up. Starting with the rear buffer beam everything is positioned very carefully by eye and soldered together. Not difficult as such, but quite painstaking.
Image

The cab sides need beading adding. The beading is a bit of strip with an etched recess so it sits against the cab opening. It was a case of bend - solder bend - solder. All rather fiddly and ended up looking messy.
Image

Still, it cleaned up OK.

With the beading on the sides can be soldered to the footplate.

Beading added to the tank tops and handrails to the cab.

Very nice looking little kit, I may get one of those.

Theres nothing like soldering bits of brass together after a day at work to calm you down.

Have a look at the Backwoods kits, absolutely fantastic detail and everything is included in the box. A challenging build though!.

I like it. Just enough fiddly bits to give you a taste of what a more complicated kit would be like.

Done a bit more...
Cab front and rear along with window frames. Inner parts of the tanks and some of the cast cab interior.
Image
The cast cab interior doubles as ballast. Instructions say the castings are thick enough to use full heat and regular solder. Kind of. More welding than soldering.

Making a start on the chassis.
Here it is all flat alongside the axle bushes.

Folded up.
Image

Motor mount soldered in and wheels and motor test fitted.
At this point it got a bit fiddly and the chassis gained a bit of a twist. However it's not too bad and there's a facility for making the front axle compensated which should help.

Body dropped on top of the chassis.

Smoke box loosely fitted in place. There's clearly some technique I'm missing here as I found it quite fiddly to bend and solder up neatly.

That will look a nice job when it's finished. I see the old standby, a clothes peg, was on hand in one picture !
I'm intrigued to know how you formed and rolled the boiler? With the standard broom handle?

The steps in their component parts.
Image

Much fiddling and finger burning later and they're on. A length of wire soldered to the back keeps them rigid.

Nellie was feeling a little neglected so I thought I'd treat her to some brakes.
