HWARTHATAFAIRRAWAGNSWEIS MODEL RAILWAY

Post by timbologist »

After being a lurker for many years I have finally got the nerve up to share my own little world
the photo's will be a bit mixed up for a while till I get to where I am now.

the room is about 7.3 metres ( 24 feet ) long by 2.1 ( 7 feet ) metres wide the base board is about 4 foot high to sit over the top of my desk and the filing cabinets.

the system will be analog ( to many locos to convert and old hornby triang ).

most of the buildings will be scratch built using mainly the linka molds and other molds I have made using plaster and builders bog.

the track runs around the walls and through the bookcase.
this is a view of the room looking south before any work was started<br />as you can see a bit of a mess

I love it, we have an awkwardly placed bookcase, but I don't think I would get permission...

Lofty, I saw the answer for your awkwardly placed book case whist touring Shugborough hall last week. The spines of books glued to a sheet of wood. In that case to hide a door to the serfs' passage, for your book case to hide the shelf where the trains pass through.

like I said I'll jump around a bit

so today a bit of modelling this house is that of I.A.R.Turner who is the owner or the pottery ( and my late farther who was a master potter its in his memory ) you can see in the background of one of the attached photos.
the house walls are made of plaster cast from moulds the roof is cardboard individual shingles the fence is made from individual stones very painstakingly placed,

sorry about quality of some of the photo's got this new camera and trying to figure it out ( used to film SLR's not compact digital's ).

enough for today

Love that front gate, superb piece of modelling

Nice model, I like the stone work. And your gardener will be busy with the hedge cutting.

hello again

last post mentioned the pottery, this is a work in progress need to scratch build the windows for the buildings the 5 kilns are pretty much finished, will need a bit more weathering when
the whole model is finished.

its located on the River Parrot and is in the town of Hazeldene On Parrot ( where I live, Hazeldene is on the King Parrot Creek ) and has a canal to the west side where the barges load and unload.

THE SECRET BITS

The kilns where made using a turned wooden plug, that was covered in Vaseline then several layers of newspaper glued over it then over a couple of mixes body filler was built up over the paper.
when enough was applied the whole thing was placed in the wood lathe and turned to shape, any missed bits were filled and re-turned the course lines were cut using a thread chaser of the appropriate spacing.
but unfortunately the vertical lines were all individual carved, and then painted and weathered, the black soot is ground up charcoal, the whitish ash is sieved ash from our fire and the rust is sieved rust sanded of rusty steel and the bands on the left kiln are strips of foil from the inside of a Milo tin.

hope you like stay tuned as there is more to come

I keep dropping in & love the work you are doing on your layout, I thought the gate through that lovely stone wall was super (Is that scratch built by the way ?) but your kilns are a real touch of class.

I think the detail & paint job is spot on, top marks. Really looking forward to seeing the completed pottery area & with the work done so far you've set a very high standard.

Cheers for taking the time in posting the pictures.

Hi
Nice models, interesting technique.
The kilns where made using a turned wooden plug, that was covered in Vaseline
What was the purpose of the vaseline?

Do you leave the wooden plugs inside or knock them out leaving hollow kilns?

hi Pete
What was the purpose of the Vaseline?
The Vaseline is to stop the paper sticking to the wooden plug, theoretically makes it slid of easily but we all know the difference between theory's and practice,
the plug is also tapered so it slides off,
Do you leave the wooden plugs inside or knock them out leaving hollow kilns?
The plugs are removed so that the kilns are hollow
Very interesting kiln construction, I wonder what is next)
well Lofty you will have to keep coming back to see. I have lots to show and hopefully it is of interest to you fellow modellers.

time to give back something I hope

Excellent detailed modelling, but a rather banal question, seeing as nobody else has asked - how did you arrive at the name of the layout?

hello all

Today we have some pictures of Blossom House for those of you that are familiar with those fantastic cardboard models by "The King Of Card" from
http://www.wordsworthmodelrailway.co.uk
will know that this house is based on his design which I am most grateful for if you are not familiar with his designs they are free to download so go have a look via the above link.

the whole model is scratch built the house is made of plaster using the linka system the window frames are cast in builders bog from a master I made.
side fence is from Cyprus pine cut into paillings, rails and posts and assembled the posts are checked out to take the railings.
Gate is from copper wire and bridal veil type netting

And in the back yard we have one of those Aussie icons the Hills Rotary Clothes Hoist complete with washing, a few blankets and some socks.

I must stress I am not a rivet counter I like things to look good and also these small details that are eye catchers actual distract the attention from the bad bits
so have a dual purpose.

so if any body wants to know anything about what I have done or how I do things please ask I am most willing to share.
