Hello Danny,

I really do like the whole concept of this layout. Really different design and the way in which the baseboard and scenery are intergeral is an eye opener - certainly makes me think about my next project.

Keep up the great work and keep posting!

Are those tracks on the inside of the curve under the reservoir joined together or are they sidings? I think they would operate better as a loop then you can send trains in either direction at the double junction and they will return on the opposite track facing the right way.

Damn intergeral another word I have to look up :P. Thanks I'm glad you like it. With my railways I like to see the railway fit into the scenery instead of the other way round.

Yes they are sidings I agree it would be much better to have them as a loop and I do understand what you mean; and I think it would be better. But the problem is the outside curve would be 8inch radius which many people might agree is quite tight so the inner would be smaller.

Danny,

Great stuff so far. The bridge looks good even without the scenery! My first layout (far too many years ago now! ) that my dad made for me was similar in its simplicity but had bundles of operational interest. The passing loop idea is a goodun, but I'm sure that whatever you settle for, as long as you get what you want out of it, that's the main thing! Even at this infant stage it has a good 'feel' to it. Good use of formers by the way! Looking forward to more pictures.

For the bridge nearest the reservoir I want to try and recreate a bridge kindof like the Albert Edward Bridge. I'm not going to try get it the exact size or anything like that because it probably won't fit, I just want to copy the design. Below is a photo of it:

Roughly halfway inbetween Ironbridge and Buildwas, on the River Severn, in Shropshire.

I have no track down, not real update on my layout as I am still waiting for stuff. So I decided to think of a way I could watch trains on my layout, well sort of. Below is a link to a little flash movie showing how I could run trains on my layout. Note: Flash Player 7 or above is needed for it to work.

Not much of an update I have completed another bridge on my layout. Not the Albert Edward Bridge I have based this one on a different one; Stamp-end Bridge Lincoln.

the image is a bit naff quality at the moment but I will hopefully take another when the batteries in my camera are charged.

Yep, very nice bridge there, Danny; are you going to put it over a river?

The bridge was designed by the renown Oldham engineer, Sir William Fairbairn, whose patend girder bridge became a standard throughout the world. The Stamp End bridge is the oldest surviving example still in working use and was the subject of one of the first railway illustrations of Lincoln.

The largest bridged gap is for the river and the smaller bridged gap is where a railway siding will go through.

Finally got some track laid ~ well took pictures of the track I laid around 6 days ago. Only got one bit of flexi track left and I reckon 3 more peices and some medium points. The corners are a bit tight but none of the trains seem to struggle round them so that is good.

Realised aswell that I have added the track base further up the board since my last update as well this was done about a month ago.

Image
On this first picture near the top right corner of the baseboard you can see that the track is missing quite a bit of sleepers. This is because of me not thinking when adding a power feed. I soldered the two cables onto the bottom of the tracks adjacent to each other, forgetting what when making a curve the tracks move - and they did parting the sleepers. Hopefully I can add some ones in though :).

Image
I have yet to do the bridge at the front of the layout but the track is strong enough to support itself so the bridge can be a later addition.

Image
This image shows a view up the valley showing the valley formers and the trackbed, you can also see where the dam will be at the back which will hide the second loop.

Danny.

Cost
--------------------------------------------------------
£2:30 - 1000mm N gauge flexitrack x 3
£5:50 - Peco SetTrack LH Point x 4
£5:50 - Peco SetTrack RH Point
£1:25 - Rail Joiners Insulated
£1:25 - Rail Joiners Nickel Silver
--------------------------------------------------------
£43:50 - Total
