Re: Starlingford - new pics on page 28
Hi everyone
Not much to report, other than to announce that the third of my reviews is now up on the site, this time looking at Hornby's N15 here.
In other news, I have at last managed to find a model shop that isn't a million miles away. Hiding in an industrial estate in Portlethen is a veritable Aladdin's Cave of goodies, so I foresee a few more trips out! I managed to return not hopelessly out of pocket (though it was a close-run thing: he had a WD 2-8-0, a G2a, a K3...) but I did pick up a Maunsell coach and some vehicles, as well as scenic stuff - including bark, which I had never thought could look convincing, but 'Ely Bridge' has made me rethink that.
In other news, my Dad is in town today to take my brother home after his first year of Uni (aww, bless) and I'll be handing him a load of stuff to take back with him, including cars, trees, fencing, buildings and - hallelujah - replacement snowplough blades for my ViTrains 37. Sadly, however, it'll be August before I myself am in a position to appreciate much - or any - of this, so don't be expecting many more updates on this thread before then. Apart from anything else, I'm disappearing to Atlanta for 5 weeks on Sunday (a research trip to MARBL at Emory University, paid for by my Uni, score...!) so I don't know how frequently I'll be online. I expect to return, though, laden down with (a) lots of pairs of trousers (I take 36" in the leg. No one stocks 36" leg in this country. High street stores go up to 34", and High & Mighty start at 38"!) and (b) lots of scenic stuff - Woodland Scenics, here I come!
Have fun meantime,
Gavin
PS I have started to re-up the Marlbrook thread: it should be restored by the end of the week, complete with all-new pictures of recent developments!
PPS: a pic, finally, to show you what I have been able to get up to in relation to Starlingford: a (currently half-built) model of a passenger ferry (an excellent Kibri kit) that is clearly showing the stresses of a lifetime's hard service in the fjord that gives 'Starlingford' its name. Here it is, far upstream on the Marlbrook canal:

Aberdeen is a horrible place for a modeller! First Brian Sherif Closed down, then toymaster on schoolhill (Has it moved?) and I heard there was a smallish warehouse near the beach. I was in portlethen not long ago thats a *word censored* to know I was that close! I'm off to inverness on monday which isn't much better but the toymaster there is quite big, and stocks a lot of hornby.
The ferry is very nice!
Ryan.

Hi Ryan. Yep, Toymaster has gone entirely (and Forbidden Planet on School Hill is closing too, which makes, officially, a useless street with nothing worthwhile on it at all) and the last time I looked at the one on the beach it seemed to be closed-down too. The Portlethen one is on the Badentoy industrial estate (Unit 7, Badentoy road, I think). Inverness, however, not only has Toymaster (although they had flood damage a few months ago that severly affected their ability to hold stock, and I don't know if that's been rectified yet) but also Inverness Model Shop, at 25 Grant Street. It's worth checking out - he is, among other things, a Bachmann stockist.briantwigley wrote:Aberdeen is a horrible place for a modeller! I was there in february and the shop was fine, the IMS had about 3 N Gauge locos so I ended up with a tin of rust paint and some files!

Darren - you won't be disappointed by the locomotive. And if the other half is...her irritation won't last that long, and by the time it's over and done with (and you're allowed back in the marital bed again) you'll still have the engine.bizzyd6405 wrote:hay gavin

The White Pullman is a lovely train.
(And Excalibur looks excellent with Maunsells too! )

Just having a pot of tea after sneaking out of the loft........I just love this layout as it has everything that you can think off.
I just hope I can get mine as good as this one.
Keep on rolling.
Mike.

1. Pots of tea are fine fine things, and ought to be enjoyed. Go on, I say!mikem64 wrote:Just having a pot of tea after sneaking out of the loft........I just love this layout as it has everything that you can think off.

2. There are a couple of things I would really like to have on here but just don't have space. A river would be nice, as would some rolling fields, but essentially I'm happy with the plan
3.I have no doubt you will!
4. I will next roll my way to Starlingford in mid-August, when I will roll up with yet more stock and structures to add (a variety of sheds, a coaling tower...), all of which will - or should be - added relatively easily, because by then, hopefully, I'll be on a roll. Hopefully with a bacon roll in hand, and a clear role to play in proceedings.

I am sad enough to be thinking 'ooh, only 6 weeks till I can get some work done' And if you're thinking you're having nice weather where you are, you should try Atlanta...BR125 wrote:Oooh more stock and buildings, can't wait to see these new editions on the layout Gavin!

I'm heading up to Pennsylvania next week, and I have been told of a model shop that'll be close by, so while I might not be returning to the UK loaded down with rolling stock or even more buildings (although I might find some that I could use, so I'm not ruling the possibility out just yet) I do expect to pick up some small items, the kind of things I think of as 'scene-makers' - you know, the little touches that bring a scene to life. So I'll be looking out for crops for my allotments, garden sheds, people, dustbins, fencing and that kind of thing. One of the jobs I really must do when I'm home is get some pavement laid round the long row of terraced houses. I reckon Superquick paving paper glued to 2mm mounting board would do rightly - much faster than the Metcalfe method of laying individual paving stones and, from a distance anyway, indistinguishable. Paint the road and voila - job done in an hour. Hopefully...
Regards,
Gavin

Amazing layout, I've just looked through the whole thread. How long is the platform, and what are the general dimensions of the layout?

Hi Fifey - brave man yourself for taking on all 30 pages! And thank you for your kind comments - the layout progresses very slowly, but I quite like how it's going so far . The main station is somewhere in the region of 5' long, and the layout as a whole is 10' x 16', with an added board beneath the window which houses the engine sheds, water tower and soon-to-be-added coaling tower.
Cheers,
Gavin

Re: Starlingford - new pics on page 28
Well, I'm back from the US with lots of scenic-y things including, as it turns out, a 1:76 racoon that I may have to disguise as a badger... Also, I have now got a beautiful LNER black K3, No. 2934, that's even nicer 'in the flesh' than it appears in photographs. I haven't yet run it, but it looks wonderful, and it seems very heavy, which makes me think it will be quite a hauler. Should look good on the long 'Ocean' coal train, especially now that I have two matching LNER small brakevans to go at the front and rear of the train...
I'll be returning home in 2 1/2 weeks so look out for more pictorial updates then! I'll have to do a proper LNER fest, if only to annoy Pedanticmongrel, but now that I have something like 13 LNER locos I should be able to make a decent fist of running a varied timetable, with an A3, K3, D49, V2, V3, N2... and, of course, a couple of 'Streaks'...
Roll on August...
*edit* - Hey! 700th Post! Woohoo!
